Best liquid highlighter for face and contouring

With all the new makeup trends that are coming out, one of the first steps is starting out with contouring and highlighting your face.

Before we start talking about which highlighters are the best, I thought I’d talk to you about both highlighting and contouring, we’re going to talk about the how to contouring and highlighting parts that can become part of your makeup routine.

First off what contouring? Contouring uses shading to help define or reshape some of your facial features with darker makeup. What is highlighting?

Highlighting is doing the opposite of contouring by using light shimmering makeup that can help emphasize the areas of your face that naturally catch the light.

It may feel a little weird at first when you realize you have to put a darker/lighter shade on your face and not really know how to do it.

Well have no fear, I’m here to help you so that you can get it right the first time. The first thing you have to do is to get the right products.

You have a few options. You can use foundation, one that is a couple of shades lighter than your skin tone, and one that is darker, you can use powder foundation, you can use bronzer for the contouring, and for the highlighting, you can use liquid highlighters, cremes, powders or the lighter foundation.

There are many different but for this article, we’re going to be talking creme contouring makeup and what the best liquid highlighter for face are.

The first thing you’ll be starting with is contouring. Feel free to work with whichever product you find you’re most comfortable with.

You are going to want to apply the product to your temples, hairline, the area beneath your cheekbones, the jawline and nose. You’re then going to blend it out WELL so that there are no harsh lines.

Next comes the highlighting. You’re going to want a foundation 1-2 shades lighter than your normal foundation color or, in my opinion, the best product to use would be a liquid highlighter.

You’re going to put it on places that catch the light, like the tops of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose, your forehead and your chin. Be sure to blend well just enough until you have the shimmer you want.

Now we’re going to talk about what are some of the best liquid highlighters. The ones that are going to give you that soft, dewy glow that goes great with any season.

NARS has a best selling cult classic Orgasm blush shade which is a pretty pink-peach color that also comes in liquid highlighter form. Orgasm Illuminator which people seem to absolutely love.

Women use this product all over there face as a blush and even eyeshadow. NARS also carries highlighters in powder form. So you have a choice to use what your most comfortable with.

MAYBELLINE’S FACE STUDIO MASTER STROBING LIQUID ILLUMINATING HIGHLIGHTER had its users saying its a gorgeous illuminator that worked well under their foundation as well as regular.

They loved it both ways. Its available in different colors and also comes in a  Micro Pearl liquid formula. And it’s not a bad deal depending on where you buy it.

Another fan favorite liquid highlighter is from BENEFIT called High Beam. It is well loved because of its satin pink color. It blends easily for a gorgeous glow and you only need a couple of drops.

Apply the drops where you want to add radiance like your cheekbones, brow bones, forehead then blend. Women claim that it is bright and gives you the shimmer you want.

SEPHORA’S Radiant Luminizing Drops is another popular product from a popular brand. It is a lightweight liquid luminizer that can be worn alone, or with your favorite complexion products.

The Radiant Luminizing Drops formula infuses complexion products with a subtle brightness for a natural glow. Its paraben-free and comes in different shades so there’s a shade for everyone.

URBAN DECAY Naked skin highlighting fluid comes in what a concealer packaging looks like. And thanks for the little doe-foot applicator you could add product precisely to the areas you want to be highlighted.

This applicator is different than some of the others and that’s why I like there packaging the best. It hits all the right spots and makes application a little easier for you. Especially if you’re just starting to use highlighters.

Fluid Sheer by GIORGIO ARMANI is worth its luxurious price tag. After applying this to your skin, whether it’s alone or with makeup, luminosity and radiance emanate from your skin in a delicious way.

These satiny drops practically melt in your hand. You’ll want to apply these drops where you want light on your face. You’ll fall in love with this product just as so many have.

Highlighting and contouring go hand in hand. It is very easy to learn the techniques, then all you have to do is pick a product you feel would work best for you.

So have fun practicing and in no time you’ll have your face contoured and highlighted in the exact way that you want. You’ll have yourself wondering why you’ve never done this before.

    Hi Nicole,

I read this “how to” article on contouring and applying highlighter with a great deal of interest. I’ve never done much in the way of highlighting but I’m ready to experiment. Lately, I find myself using a lot more foundation in an effort to even out my skin tones due to sun damage. I think highlighting would help provide a better effect. So, I appreciate your suggestions, Thanks for the info!

Highlighting and contouring can definitely help with using less foundation. It also highlights your features which is something foundation alone cannot do, so play with it and I feel you’ll notice the difference right away.

This is a great article on liquid highlighter for face and contouring.  I have not really been keen on contouring before and this caught my attention.  As you say, “Highlighting and contouring go hand in hand. It is very easy to learn the techniques, then all you have to do is pick a product you feel would work best for you”. Would you recommend long term use of these products?

I personally do highlight and contour when I have somewhere to go. I wouldn’t do it if I was going to let’s say publix. But your someone who wears makeup on a daily basis, I would recommend it. Once you have your technique down it really only takes minutes. So I say go for it. It really does enhance your features.

Hello, my wife current uses the Rodan and Fields skin care products. She likes the products but they are very expensive. How do these products compare with regards to cost and performance to the R&F line of products? If she (we) can save some money I’ll be all over this! Thanks for the helpful information!

Hi there I to am a fan of Rodan and Fields skincare line, but I’m going to let you in on a secret. The products I Iisted are my personal favorites not only because they work great. MAYBELLINE’S Master Strobing Liquid Illuminating Highlighter is only $8! But don’t let the small price tag fool you. This product delivers!

Hi Nicole! I am familiar with NARS brand. I would like to buy some very soon. Is there any products that you use and highly recommend? Also, is there a specific amount of foundation we should use for some of the products you mentioned? I hope these products are for all skin tones.

Hi there the products I listed are my favorite, but another brand you may want to try is MAC’s Hyper Real Glow Palette. It’s a powder form but does work well. It’s definitely worth a try.

I noticed that the cult classic Orgasm blush shade costs around $38, is that with postage or is that extra?

I’ve been wanting to get my wife a nice birthday present and am considering buying her the “fluid sheer” by Georgio Armani, have you personally used this foundation and is it made of beeswax base or something else? I want to make sure it goes on smoothly without hassle as my wife was complaining her last foundation was too solid to go on properly.

    Thanks, Dave & Yvette.

Hi, thanks for replying, Fluid Sheer are simply highlighting drops. It is not a foundation. Although Giorgio Armani does make a foundation. What Fluid Sheer does is attract light to certain parts of the face. I have used this product and when I do I must say I feel “pretty” when I wear it. It gives off a glow. It’s a perfect gift and goes on smoothly
